SBA Asian Heritage Month Business Forum

DDD John called me to tell me that RA asked if I have an Asian Heritage Month event.
I told him I only scheduled several webinars, no celebration event, but I coordinate one for her.
SBA Regional Administrator Marlene Cintron had a meeting with me on 4/14 to discuss the event.
One month later, today is the big day.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all the organizations working with me during the pandemic
to deliver SBA Relief information to the communities they service.

Thanks to all the speakers (except two) for following the agenda and attendees for participating the event, especially Ying, Tech Incubator at Queens College. We have 168 attendees.

Special thanks to Regional Public Communication Director Matthew

SBA Region II Regional Administrator Marlene Cintron Remarks

Thank you to the SBA New York District Office and its partners for putting on this event this afternoon. It’s a pleasure for me to join you.

· My name is Marlene Cintron and I was appointed by President Biden to serve as the Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Atlantic Region that covers NY, NJ, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

· As a native New Yorker, I am no stranger to this City.

· Previous to this appointment, I served for over a decade as President of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation.

· But we’re here today because we all understand that small business is big business in America; over 99% of companies are considered small and employ a large number of our residents.

· Thanks to President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act and his comprehensive vaccination strategy, businesses and schools are open and more Americans are safely returning to work. This is especially critical for our small businesses that need a strong workforce to reopen and are ready for their businesses to thrive.

· The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to advancing equity and opportunity for AANHPI communities here in New York and across the country, and SBA is here to continue to support you all as you continue to provide critical and essential services to the City and State of New York.

· SBA’s financing tools and support are readily available to you all and I encourage you to reach out to Beth and her amazing staff with any question you may have.

· Together over 2021, the SBA New York Team assisted small businesses in accessing over 44 billion dollars to over 61,000 borrowers.

· In just the first quarter of FY22 far in Metro New York, almost $437.6 million has been guaranteed by lenders to more than 700 borrowers. That’s on pace with last year’s historic lending totals and helping entrepreneurs start, grow and expand.

· And while 14.25% of borrowers self-identify as members of the Asian community so far this year, we want to ensure that number increases to meet demand through our procurement program.

· The Federal government has contracted for more than billion in goods and services from New York businesses over the past three years. We want and need more small businesses in your community to be a part supplying our needs as well while giving you access to our buying power.

· The Federal government is the largest purchaser of goods and services in the world. This can include everything from office supplies to construction to catering for example and in many cases, there are statutory set-aside requirements for small, minority and women owned businesses.

· I am very excited about our future but very cognizant of the fact that we also have to do better.

· For this very reason I was delighted to have the honor and opportunity to meet with Commissioner Kim, from the New York City Small Business Services. We are going to combine our Agency strengths to insure that each and every one of our small businesses in NYC have access to ALL that is needed to strengthen our small business community.

· I would be remiss if I do not recognize the fact, especially today, that our small businesses and customers live in a time of fear and hate. Just know that we support you, we need you and we thank you for what you do daily to make our city as rich and vibrant and welcoming to all.

· Thank you Beth and Man Li for inviting me to participate today. I’m excited to listen and engage with you all as we begin to connect with you individually.

I make two presentations: SBA Financing and Government Contracting
